Jack Valentin, former Scientific Secretary of the International Committee on Radiological Protection, joined us to discuss all things radiation. Jack Valentin was the Scientific Secretary of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, ICRP, from 1997 until 2008. The ICRP is an independent charitable international organization that advances the science of radiological protection for the public benefit. In this webinar, Jack presents some history, anecdotes, and problems that have emerged during the development of the System of Radiological Protection. He also speaks to ongoing discussions and what the future may bring to radiological protection. Jack also includes reference to Canada’s role in global radiation protection.

The regulation of ionizing radiation falls under different jurisdiction in Canada depending upon the source, use, and quantity. Lynn MacDonald, Manager of Training and Liaison Scientist, gives a review of the current status of the regulations for nuclear, x-ray, and NORM, including overarching legislation, who and what are being protected, and information such as whole-body dose limits, eye dose limits, the need for a license or to register equipment, and what the responsible person is called. The 40-minute information session is followed by a 20-minute wellness break in the form of beginner Tai Chi by Charlmane Wong from Ji Hong Tai Chi & Qi Gong, Richmond Hill.
